Welcome to the boards, Shaun!  What brought you here?  What's it like being a philosopher in New Zealand?

Hi Rodzilla

Thanks for the questions and apologies - I should have gone to the introduction section before posting for the first time.

I discovered the podcasts by chance a week or two after Stef started and have listened to all of them (and donated!). I recently changed from donating to being a subscriber, as I reckon it will be easier for Stef to plan cashflow that way. Also, I buy the books, and now the T-shirts - anything to support Stef and FDR. Have lurked around the boards a few times but quite busy with my job (Doctor) and so the my priority has been listening to the podcasts.

For me, Stef is unique: as well as being incredibly intelligent, he is also the best communicator I have come across, and with this combination I think that huge success (in terms of getting the message out) is not far away.

One of the main benfits for me may seem pretty trivial, but I now have the confidence to reject unchosen positive obligations without feeling guilty. I'm not going to change the Government (we have a particularly repulsive socialist Govt in NZ) but I can be free by, for example, not spending a precious day going to a BBQ with people I do not like just because they are relatives or because there is social pressure to attend.

We have quite a few libertarians (which I was) over here, but they struggle to accept the logic behind the ancap position, and still believe that a smaller amount of Government violence is good.

Thanks again

Shaun

Sweet! I love them!  My only suggestion: something with a big, quickly scrawled "A" ensconsced within a circle...the traditional anarchy symbol of course.  I think I might get one without a back graphic and do it myself.  Otherwise, I've been looking for a decent hoodie for the chill that passes for winter here, I guess I won't be getting that Misfits logo  hoodie.

Edit:  Going through all of the merchandise, I can't see waht's written on the black "edgy" t-shirt.  It says it is the "...more angry version..." but I can't read the blue transfer on black shirt to tell what it says.  Could you tell us please?

Many thanks, that's a huge compliment.

While I'm on a roll, here are a few more comments!

I tell you, when there is an event like a BBQ or birthday party with people I don't like and I'd go because excuses were wearing thin, I'd hate every minute and dread going for a week before. Now I do whatever I want and its great - as well as enjoying the time "gained" I have double enjoyment thinking that I'm not being a slave to others. This started last year and my wife found it tricky to start with - quite embarrassed that I never went to things except with my own friends. We discussed it at length, and when she understood that I would not want her to spend time with any friends or relatives of mine that she did not want to spend time with, she "got it" as well and supports my choices. People think I'm odd for not conforming, but I don't care, and I tell you, it is incredibly liberating not to be a slave to relatives or social pressure.

The family stuff on FDR is a little harder for me to get as may parents are (were, dad died young a few years ago), great. My mum is my secretary and if she wasn't my mum, she's exactly the sort of person I'd have as a friend anyway. My dad was incredibly optimistic and enthusiastic and this has rubbed off on me, leading to business success. For example, I remember at the age of 6 or 7 saying that I wanted to leave scouts as they went to church once a month and I thought it was insane, all these people pretending to worship a ghost in the sky - it was like the "Emperors new clothes". My parents said that they agreed, there was no evidence for it and it was a good decision to leave the scouts. But I think that I was extremely lucky and I see terrible parenting everywhere. I also de-fooed an evil Aunt 10 years ago, told her never to call me again, and my parents applauded that.

And of course, the most important thing is being a great parent to my 6 year old boy - I may have taken the curiosity thing too far though - he now says "dad, why are you always asking me questions?"!! We moved house when he got to school age, the main reason being that we could then send him to the only non-religeous private school in NZ.

Finally I've taken liberty into my career - rather than fight Govt beaurocrats in a Govt Hospital, I work for myself and have started and sold two medical businesses and and am soon starting the third.

Cheers, and apologies for such a self-centred post!

I would buy a t-shirt if you made a sleeveless one with nipple holes cut out.

Sorry, listening to 920.

Isn't it better if I buy one in Miami ? If the shipping is free for me, it isn't free for you right ?

Awesome posts, Shaun!  It's a real pleasure to meet you!

It sounds like you had some unusually good parents, and that your son is off to a good start.  [:)

Seriously, I can't read what the text is on the black shirt labeled "edgy."  The resolution (either in the pic or my monitor) is not good enough to make out what it says.

The T-shirt and polo I ordered are great - decent quality and good sizes. Not sure I'll see many others in rural New Zealand, but you never know. Cheers. Shaun
