religious people who are not raised religious

Came up in an argument with an anarcho-primitivist. He says that almost all of the religious people he's met were not raised religious.

I find this incredibly dubious. What do the rest of you think? Any possible explainations?

(this might be irrelevent, but this person also insists that it is not wrong to spank children despite my sincerest efforts to explain otherwise)
