    Employment?

Serious question and I don't know where else here would best be the place to post it:

Is there a forum or a subgroup of some kind around here for the purpose of networking to find employment, business partnerships/opportunities, etc.?

I've been unemployed since Feb. of 2010 so forgive me if I appear to be a bit desperate - I have two children to house, cloth, and feed.

    Thank you

So sorry to hear about your incredibly difficult situation.

As far as a forum/subgroups go, you may have discovered by now that one does not technically exist. However, by simply posting your concerns here on FDR might be a good place to start.

If you go to the podcasts section of the site, click the drop down <All Categories> radio button in the "Search Freedomain Radio Media" section, select "podcasts" and enter "job" , "career", "entrepreneur" and related terms, I would strongly suggest listening to them, and take notes.

I did, and I have a job interview at 10:30 Tuesday morning.

    THANK YOU!

That's the kind of reply I find helpful.

FYI:  I'm only up to podcast 59 (I'm going to listen to all of them - as best I can, when I can) and so far I'm convinced Stephan is on the right track.  Along the way (of listening to his podcasts) I've checked out books by Malcolm Gladwell and I'm about to see what my public library has on hand from Murray Rothbard.

    Thank you again.

If you are able to work in Canada I could probably lend you a hand, let me know.

    Re: Employment?

I am in Portland Oregon.  I'm a U.S. citizen by birth.  (My wife is a Canadian citizen though.)

Relocation is not much of an option due to cost and it's pretty tough to sell a house these days.  Yes, I also have a mortgage and two children to feed which is why finding meaningful and financially rewarding work is a must.  Using real numbers (not the fake/propoganda method the Feds use) shows Oregon's REAL unemployment rate is somewhere near 24% and I'm part of that awful statistic.    sigh   I'd prefer to be self employed but I'm risk adverse, I have no money to invest (it takes money to make money) and two children are a challenge to work around if I want to "invest" my time in some business venture (you know, paying attention to them, nurturing them, spending time with them, that sort of thing...LOL).

I laugh but it's really sad and pathetic who awful this country has become and that there really is no place to go to get away from "it."

Do you know anything about playing guitar? If so, I may have some writing work for you, if that's something you're interested in.

It doesn't pay fantastically (more than min wage though), and it's only a couple hours of work, but could put some cash in your pocket.

Guitar?  Nope, sorry.  My background is unusual but recently (last 10-15 years) my focus has been as Executive Assistant, Administrative Assistant, Personal Assistant with a heavy dose of marketing/database maint. and training (as in teaching others how to use), and researcher/trouble shooter, problem solver, time saver for busy people with money to spend on an assistant.

    Re: Employment?

Hello, I don't mean to hijack this thread but I too would like some advice for my livlihood.  I'm currently 16 and in public schooling, I wish to drop out but most major employers refuse to hire someone without graduating from college(let alone highschool).

    Some information about me.

I play the violin and mandolin. Violin I play well and Mandolin moderatly well.  I am willing to do anything as long as I can get shelter and food.  I wish to be independent and strive for excellence and to prove that one doesn't need to spend 22+ years getting "educated"(imprisoned).  I take Steve Jobs as my example although I cannot cntemplete his fanatstic journey from college dropout to magnificent CEO I want to do something with my life, I don't care if its cleaning out someones house or clipping hedges for 50 years I just want to be an independent individual and live like theres no state.

    You're welcome.

Just curious,  are you going to listen to the podcasts in order or are you going to immediately skip the one's on job interviewing?

    Re: Employment?

I've skipped to the podcasts that are *vaugely* about job interviewing (one must listen between the lines, there are aren't any sort of podcasts YET that say, "If A do B" that sort of thing..but I think I get the point of the messages in the podcasts).  Also, I've skipped to listen to the foundational podcasts about philosophy, etc.  Now I'm listening the the remainder/bulk in order but skipping those that seem redundant.  (Meaning I'm convinced of the foundational/rational argument for non-violent libertarianism/arnarchisim and now I'm searching for "How To" information.)   That stated, I'm also trying to find work and paying the bills is my primary focus otherwise homelessness for myself, my wife, and my two children is in my future.

With even a basic grasp of the English language, you can find TONS of writings jobs online. At the bare minimum, you could make $5 for every 500 words. Grunt work, but it is money. Let me know if you're interested and I can point you in the direction of where I used to find such work.

I don't know if this helps, but I consider myself ununemployable.  What I mean is that it seems impossible at this point for me to have zero access to work.  Why or how so?  I am a web designer with a background in graphic design, social media marketing, search engine optimization, etc.  I also work in the medical marijuana industry (doing design and marketing) and have acquired an additional subset of skills(we dont have to go into in detail, I'm sure you can guess) which allow me to produce a product in my own home capable of paying more than all of my bills.  (thats right, my house actually generates revenue).  In an average month I work about 30hours a week for one specific business and then spend another 10 hours a week on other clients doing anything from desinging their business cards to increasing their traffic.  If, at any time, any of these clients drops out I can replace them with other clients.  Again, not sure if this helps, but I've made a joke out of the American Dream, it has been a total cakewalk for me.  I'm 25 with a home, nice sweet car, cute puppy, stable income, etc.  It is easy when the skills you have are in high demand.

I have two friends who have done this for years, you can make $35k a year if you're dedicated enough to sit around your desk writing papers.  Both of them did fairly well for themselves (until I showed them a better way lol )

    @TheLorax

Thanks!  I messaged you about that and I would be very much interested in doing pretty much anything.  Thank you for taking the time to respond to me.

    @ThoughtTerrorist

That's very interesting, what skills does one need to belong to the medical marijuanna industry?  I know there are regulations in place that cap off the profits that are available to be made but how does one get into said industry?

I only know about medical marijuana in California.  There are no caps to how much money you can make.  All collectives (medical marijuana dispensaries or cooperatives) are required to file as a not-for-profit business and is subject to the rules therewithin.  If I can paint a picture for you : it is a cash business.  I have to mention that running, owning, or working in a collective is not the only way to make money.  Patients (individuals) can legally grow several plants themselves and depending on the technique and style and quality a single plant can yeild between 2 ounces and 7 pounds of buds.  In the going market an average middle grade pound of bud is worth about $2500.  Additionally, a lot of the shake and trim often discarded in the process contains huge amounts of THC.  Using one of a dozen processes you can make a variety of different types of hashes.  Hashes sell for about $4000 a pound.

A one light grow (1000 watt) can yield up to two pounds every two and a half months and is completely legal in the state of CA (and about 2 or 3 ozs of hash).  If you have a friend who is a patient you can "grow for them" and double up, and tripple up, etc.

I've met more dread-locked hippy millionaires in the last two years than you can imagine.

But also, with my position in the industry, there is just so much room to make a small chunky of change.  For example, I can help a grower find a collective and make about $200 per pound sold.  I can trim buds for $200 a pound.  I can buy low quality hash and make edibles.  And on and on and on..... not to mention hydroponics!

And to answer your question (sorry for the tangent) to get into the industry you need a medical marijuana recommenation from a doctor, you can get a meeting with one for $35.
