Music featured on bbc's Dangerous Knowledge

YouTube has a 10-part series on David Malone's 2007 BBC
Documentary, Dangerous Knowledge.  It covers tragic lives of
Georg Cantor, Ludwig Boltzman, Alan Turing, Kurt Godel.
No credit is ever given for the opening music (some drum flourishes,
then somber horns, oboes, then strings, dark, foreboding).

Has anyone familiar with the classical repertoire ever heard
the composition featured in it?  Haunts me still, nearly every day.
I've sampled Elgar, Mahler, on and on, but with never a match.

I don't know who composed the music but I just wanted to comment that this is one of my all time favorite documentaries.

I am also looking for it.  Have you had any luck so far? If I find it out I'll let you know here.

    Good luck!

    acdci,

I thought— looking at today’s update— comes now the answer!    No.  And no blame to you that such is not the case.  I’ve sampled many musical selections thinking I had a clue.  Adagios, Cello concertos, Elgar Enigmas, & etc.  Even contacted BBC regarding that series (no help). Eventually, I’m sure, I’ll hear it again as part of some other venue.  Nice to have an ally.  Will let you know if a solution is found.

    Roger,

I've sent an email to David Malone (malone@i330.demon.co.uk), the director and producer of the documentary and I'm still waiting for an answer from him.

    acdci,

If I thought that by piling on with a similar request to DM he’d be more likely to resolve our quest, I’d do so.  Maybe if there’s no response for several days, I’ll do just that.  I also wonder if our resident master cellist, Karl, might provide an EWAG as to that piece.

As a quick aside, what’s the trick to avoid all the pre-pended gibberish as was the case with yesterday’s acknowledgement to you?

(Here I press Post expecting same.)

    Roger,

It would be a good idea if you could send a message to DM. As you said, let's wait few days to see if he replies. Meanwhile, I was thinking of converting a portion of the documentary to MP3, and send it to colleagues in the faculty of music at our university. Maybe they can identify this piece for ours.

    Let's continue our quest!

    Regards,

    Cezar (acdcl)

I've wondered this for the longest time. I have also sent an e-mail asking information about the background music in the documentary. Tryin to do some heavy digging on the Internet to see if I can find anything.

    Galois (and Cezar)--
A short while ago I sent off my own request to David Malone
<malone@i330.demon.co.uk> again inquiring of our mutually admired theme.
I'm glad that you, Galois, have joined the fray.  A year from now,
that piece already having been identified,  acquired, overplayed,
and seldom again listened to, will-- though no longer quite
so often played-- still be certain to rekindle something of its
    presently-held appeal.

By the way, Galois, does your username derive from Evariste Galois?

Re: Music featured on bbc's Dangerous Knowledge

Hey, guys (Cezar and Galois), lookit what's now in the works.
This from today's earlier request to David Malone--

    Dear Roger,
There must be something in the air. You are the third person in as many
days to email me with the exact same question. I will get an answer for
you this week. BUT it may not a be a good answer because much of the
music was music written for film and therefore not commercially
available. But leave it with me and I will see what I can do for this
growing band of opening music lovers.
    Yours, David

No need to reveal our conspiracy here.  If he answers back again
with some sources, he'll likely CC you as well.  In any case, maybe this
    be the week.

Re: Music featured on bbc's Dangerous Knowledge

    Hi fellows!!!

    Great news!!!

I was already sad and without hope : - ), cause my college from the Music Faculty has replied to me saying that the soundtrack was unlike to be traditional (classical). Now we understand why our fruitless hours spend at internet didn’t paid off. So now, the only hope is wait for DM and see if he has time to fulfill our expectations.

    Good job Roger!!!

I’ll be in standby, waiting for the happy end to our quest!

    Cheers,

    Cezar

David has not yet gotten back with us as he intended.  Or maybe he became embittered
on discovering a concerted conspiracy (hatched here on FDR). I'll prod him later today
with another email.  Sanjay, when you get the chance, could you also send off a request
to him?  The address provided by Cezar works [David Malone-- malone@i330.demon.co.uk].

Re: Music featured on bbc's Dangerous Knowledge

    From David Malone--

    Dear Roger ...,

The big email got bounced again.  Below is the original email that keeps
getting bounced back BUT, this time, without the zip file of the piece
of music.  The music file is about 28Megs and I think that is why it is
    getting bounced.

    OLD EMAIL -

    Dear Roger ...,

sorry for the delay. Old films require digging out old files.  Found
them and also the answer. The opening music is R Strauss The Alpine
Symphony.  One of my editor's favourites.  This is the first two
minutes. It then cross mixes to a piece written for film and therefore
not available commercially by a fellow named Mike Marshal.  I have
attached a zip'ed AIFF file of the piece.  You should be able to play it
or if not use your music software to convert it to a format it can play.

Hope this helps.  If not get back to me.

    David

    * * * * *

First, the attached zip still failed to come over.  I'll get back with David again to
attempt different arrangements. Or maybe one of you guys can come up with a workable plan.
Second, David's reference to Alpine Symphony certainly begins as expected.  But-- at the point
in the documentary just as David appears in the narrative, that music is not part of early
minutes of 'Alpine'.  Unless the soundtrack is an edited arrangement of various sections
of the composition.  The other reference-- the one to Mike Marshal -- has so far not as yet
    been followed.

    BBC-Dangerous Knowledge (Part 1-10)
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cw-zNRNcF90

"Beneath the surface of the world.. are the rules of science.."
There it is.  The beginnings at least. And in the background perhaps even the Alpine Range.
Rainbow's End.  Except no near-inaudible drum flourish at very beginning as heard in documentary.

Have now listened to Alpine in full. There's still a mystery to resolve. In part 1, at about 1:36,
where (Godel?) is staring out the window, comes the soft violins. From there, rich vibrato,
superlative strings (again, am moved), then a shimmering firebrand and cello vibrato.  David then
visibly appears, walking along a wooded lakeshore, and with it the quieter violins and their
ascending sets of a three-note phrase.  Finally, at about 3:00, the music is then interrupted,
leaving off with David's continued narrative, "Our story starts here..".
The source of that music (between 1:36 and 3:00) is not to be found anywhere in 'Alpine'.
This is possibly the cross-mix with music by Mike Marshall.
