That is very interesting, thank you so much for posting Richard, about 10 years ago I gave up on mainstream nutritional advice, since it always seemed to be changing, and just tried to eat a variety of foods that I liked, and it seems to have worked out very well...Smile

Thanks for posting.  Ever since we determined that our children had food allergies/sensitivies (primarily gluten and dairy), we stopped paring attention to what most people determine to be a "healthy" diet.  We've all lost weight and feel great.  Oh yeah, we use plenty of saturated fats, mostly extra-virgin olive oil and coconut oil.

Here is a good piece of different saturated fats and how they affect the body.  http://www.westonaprice.org/The-Skinny-on-Fats.html

Also, this is one of my favorites on Canola oil. http://www.westonaprice.org/The-Great-Con-ola.html

Re: Finally. The results of the largest real study on saturated fat.

Mmmmmmmm bacon and eggs with butter and cheese.....

In all seriousness, thanks for posting this, Richard.  I've recently been doing the lowcarb and I am feeling lots better!  I don't have any issues with digestion anymore and my skin is far less dry than it was a few months ago.  Also, and this is kind of weird to me, but maybe you've heard of it: I've not been exercising much (it's been pretty cold lately) but I feel stronger (MUCH less groaning getting in and out of chairs, barely need to use my arms to lift or stabilize myself), and my clothes keep getting looser, but my weight is pretty stable (260-265).  It's as if my body is adding muscle tissue simply due to my diet.

If this is what is occurring, then I would imagine that at some point, my body would stop adding muscle and the fat would appear to just melt away.  I'd be back down to high school weight, and beyond, except this time I will stick to what works for me no matter what. Big Smile

Also, in recent food experiments, I have found that I need to eat quality meats and dairy and veggies, and that grains & gluten are about the worst things I can eat aside from refined sugar.

So for my birthday this year, no cake, please... unless it's non-sugar cheesecake!!! Wink

    Richard Deziel:

I'm all misty with joy in knowing how well you're doing and feeling.Big Smile..None of what you mention above James is weird to me and to an increasing number of folks around the world...I'm curious...Has your quality of sleep improved too?...Could it be that on top of adding some muscle weight, you retain less unnecessary water especially subcutaneously, which makes your clothes keep getting gradually looser?...That is my experience...

Everyone has a unique specific tipping point when it comes to how much total carbs in grams a day one may consume to start the actual fat burning metabolism without doing much exercise at all....For me, it's about 30 grams..

For many obese folks with a  poor functioning pancreas organ, It may range from 20 or so to zero grams...I get so joyful when you say this

Thanks for your kind words, Richard!  I haven't noticed any particular improvement in sleep, but now if I eat poorly, I get a headache and have trouble doing pretty much anything, including sleep.

I might experiment with the number of carbs I consume--I haven't been counting them, just been going by a rule of thumb (it's much easier to have a "sense" of it when you don't eat bread!), but I think doing a count to see where I'm at would be helpful, and would make it easier to adjust.

Re: Finally. The results of the largest real study on saturated fat.

Thanks for sharing this.  I've been putting a greater focus on diet recently and this comfirms what I have been finding.

I've actually cut down my carb intake, including nearly all wheat and grains after researching gluten in response to the post here about it.  As well, I've minimized my sugar intake, added some vitamins( Omega 3, Vitamin D since there's little sun here in Canada, B12 since I've eaten little meat in the past, a multivitamin, and some Spirulina). I've been trying to make vegetables the predominant part of my diet.

So far, although I cannot rule out placebo effect on this one and it's probably too short a time, I have noticed that my mood has improved significantly.

    Richard Deziel:

Perhaps your many benevolent hormones like testosterone naturally increase and stabilize which may make your muscles contract, extend and stretch more efficiently and easily. Have you notice your inner ear balancing mechanism working more efficiently too? That is my experience since two decades now...Many people wonder how I don't get easily dizzy.  For example, I can easily spin quickly like a top like you see figure skaters on ice but I can do it on any floor too for a whole average length dance tune..Pom Poms

I actually have noticed better balance!  I'm not to the point of getting on any dance floors yet, but when I do, I'm glad to know I will not be falling over Big Smile

Re: Finally. The results of the largest real study on saturated fat.

I find this stuff really interesting too, but this is actually not new news at all. I am currently reading the book Good Calories, Bad Calories by Gary Taubes, the man in the video that Charlotte posted about nutrition a while back. He goes into the history of all of this stuff, how it started, the political aspects and talks about the studies that have been done in the past also. The mantra about all this fat>cholesterol>heart disease stuff was started before any studies were done, and by the time studies had been done that disproved the link, there was so much invested and so much inertia that it just keep on going. I highly reccomend the book to anyone interested in nutrition. I am honestly totally shocked at how much of the very fundamental 'undisputed' nutritional advice is just plain wrong.

Also, since Gary is actually a science journalist, he provides some insight into the role that media has played in perpetrating these myths, as well as explains away so-called epidemics like the heart disease epidemic. I am only a small way through the book so far but it really is fantastic and amazingly comprehensive in all the angles that he views this from. The book is basically a meta-analysis like the link in the original post, but it goes far wider in exploring the why and not just the what.

Yup, "trouble doing pretty much anything" includes pooping as well. Stick out tongue

Good Calories, Bad Calories is awesome! I would love to see Stef do an interview with Gary Taubes.
