This brings up an interesting question. If for the first decade or so of universal health care the quality is very good and percieved as "free" by most citizens, isn't it possible that when our economy does finally colapse most people will have fond memories of the universal health care system? Seeing how they likely will not have hit rock bottom with regard to government medical care could this ultimately create a groundswell of support for such a system once we come out of the other side of deflation? After all health care is hugely important to most and generally people have a lot of emotional connection to their health care. Isn't it possible that this could end up being good for the statists we are trying to discredit?

Oh sure, and heroin addicts also have fond memories of when they first used the drug, we just have to remind everyone that it was all an illusion...

These two videos were absolutely superb Stef. Well-researched, highly informative, passionate... if this video doesn't change people's minds about the healthcare issue, nothing will.

It absolutely brakes my heart how many people died needlessly from the ban on those Beta blockers and other drugs. If that's the case in the U.S, I can only imagine the per capita death toll here in Sweden. We'v had this circus running full throttle since the 1960's.

Just came across this in R.J. Rummell's blog, and thought it was a gag at first. But it's the real McCoy:

Young people without health insurance in America can always pay out of pocket, in fact the cost benefit of this considering the one time a year visit at most makes insurance a waste of money, with the exception of lacking catastrophe coverage such as car accidents, etc.  All I have is catastrophe coverage, just a policy with a high deductible and low premiums.  I paid 100 bucks at most last year on one doctror's visit.

Oh and despite the price of healthcare in America and all its state created problems, I can still get a specialist appointment sometimes on the same day I call!

I don't want to speculate on the why, but smaller countries can get away with socialized industries easier. Maybe it's because they're importing most stuff anyway from other, bigger countries. I don't even want to imagine what happens when the biggest innovator in the world, the USA, implements that...

Afaik, Sweden had a near bankruptcy in the late 70ies and implemented a lot of reforms. You can design a socialized health care system (or other industries) in different ways, some better than others. For instance, some countries allow competition between different hospitals or schools (if you want to look at education) in their system and these countries are better off then the ones who don't allow that.

Even though Scandinavian countries have very high taxes (~50%), they don't waste as much as other countries. The US has less taxes, but they actively waste much more by burning money in defense spending and subsidies that actually hurt the economy, etc.

EDIT: Burning money would be better than spending it on defense, even without aynone dying.

I used to sell insurance and I completly agree with you. Catastrophic incidentals can be real bank busters but otherwise the average consumer of individual insurance in the united states is WAY better off with nothing more than major medical. It's not a bad idea to get preventive care lumped in though as some of those tests can be very expensive. However, if you only get them once a year you can easily cover those costs and the costs of your deductibles with the money you save on your premiums.

Stef, it's not a big deal but do you have your microphone sitting on the same desk your keyboard is resting on? I keep hearing the "thunk" sound when you press the button to advance the slide show. The only thing I could figure is that the sound of the keypress is translating through the desk to the microphone, in which case you might try getting a pad of thick felt to rest the microphone on.

    Did anyone else notice it?

    As always, fantastic video.
