Teens React to The Hunger Games

The only thing that chills my bone marrow more than this video, are the comments below it.

Dear Lord. One kid sums it up: "Society picks up your kid, chews em up and spits em out."

"Why should witlesse man so much misweene that nothing is but that which he hath seen?"

You found it chilling? I thought it was kind of cool that the kids expressed such cynicism. Cynicism is the immature form of skepticism. Not one of them said "we need a better president to make sure this never happens." In fact, they all universalized the plight of Katniss to themselves.

True, none of them said "I would have put every arrow in my quivver throught the lens of a camera," but it's a highly advanced (and not media-friendly) concept for a slave to reject the conflict with another slave and instead turn on their master.

I don't know about you, but ever since I heard about the books a year or two ago I've been avoiding them assiduously because they sounded brutal and nasty.

This is an occasion(much like "Game of thrones") where I am glad to not have gotten in on the zeitgeist.

Is it like "The Running Man" with Arnold Schwarzenegger?

Why do you find them chilling?

    Were the comments suprising?

Reminds me of Battle Royal. The movies were extremely violent.

    TheMatrixHasMe,

I see what you mean. It's sad how most teens are so desensitized to violence nowadays, and furthermore, how others who express their reservations about violence are labeled lame, oversensitive, delicate, emo, "gay," pussy, etc. (Heard this stuff thrown around all the time while at junior high school -_-)

However, I wouldn't be so quick to conclude that they are emotionally wounded and/or inured to pain (not necessarily saying you would, but). It may actually take a while before these kids truly understand the magnitude of what they see. From my impression of this video and a few others, they look like they're having lots of genuine, self-expressive fun, which I see as the wellspring of kindness and empathy. Therefore, I tend to believe their empathy, depth, and emotional sensitivity will blossom over time.

"It's way too dangerous to follow the advice of people who aren't empathetic, even if they are right."
