    The Worst Part of Religion

This may have been posted somewhere on the board or in a podcast but I haven't come across it yet.

It seems to me, the worst part of religion is that people will completely waste their lives doing stuff they hate doing under the illusion that they will get into some eternal fantasy land. By the time they realize it's a lie, it's too late.

I feel a level of sympathy for those heavily involved in religion.  My Dad who felt "God called him to teach bible at a University level" expended and continues to expend a significant portion of his life towards advancing a cause that is very likely untrue.  Sadly as a result of his efforts, he spent a portion of my life as well to this pursuit, which today I see as little more than an unproven idea whose effect has been the suppression of humanity's freedom and livelehood.

The worst part about religion I find is utter abandonment of self-morality.

Don't do good deeds because they make you feel good, do good deeds because some omnipotent Sky Daddy is watching you and is grading what you do. But! It's okay if you do something wrong, you can be forgiven if you walk in a circle three times and do ten Hail Marys!

How slavish can you be? Deriving your whole morality system based off a book written(and selectively compiled) 1,700 years ago without any kind of examination?

Are people in your opinion free to choose their restraint?

    @ brick by brick,

What is so crappy about the Matthäus-Passion? A piece of religious music which i consider as a superb human achievement, even if you consider only the use of mathematics and counterpoint. And what is so crappy about Officium Defunctorum by Victoria, Spem in alium by Tallis, Ein Deutsches Requiem by Brahms or the works by Claudio Monteverdi?

I think the worst thing is the complete reversal of morality.  The idea that not inquiring about what is right or wrong, correct or mistaken is the most moral thing is monsterous and that it would produce monsterous evil is entirely predictable.

What makes it more tragic is that it is enforced on children. Whatever religion demands becomes for the parents more important than the bonds they have with their children. My mother forced me and my siblings to pray and self-monitor, not caring at all that this was something unpleasant, painful and humiliating. I felt abandoned and horrbily sad as I was being indoctrinated. I wanted a happy, warm time spent with my mother, not this 'bow-to-god' stuff.

I can't ever forgive my mother that she put her illusions before the happiness and health of her children.

First the Easter Bunny, Santa Claus, and the Tooth Fairy. I refuse to lose this god be-lie-f too.

Once more than a bumper sticker slogan's worth of thought is given to the topic, the more ridiculous it seems to become. What amazes me too is that even some people who claim to not be religious cringe when I do not agree with them that there even MIGHT be a god.

If I tell someone I believe in and worship Poseiden (I love the water) he will chuckle at first. If I pretend to be serious, he doesn't know what to say, although I'm sure he's thinking "this guy's nuts". But yet, if I dismiss outright his god, I'm intolerant, whatever that means.

You would think that if god loved music and singing so much, he would have blessed the members of the congregation with better voices and rythm.

worse thing about religion is Jesus Camp.. But that could be said about any other irrational ideology, especially statism.

I guess it depends a lot on what kind of religion, but that is a very false statement regarding many believers.

Dude, that's a legit complaint, but you're talking about the worst parts of one type of christianity. There are hundreds of others that do nothing like that.

Re: The Worst Part of Religion

Some religions look like they have fun with music, but the Catholic Mass is the most life-draining musical event possible.  I assume the songs can be found on the internet, but what probably cannot be fully conveyed is the experience of hearing this dreadful music sung with passionless, off-key singing\moaning by a crowd of people apparently seconds away from coma.
