I retired in 2005 from the uS Army Medical Corps Reserve (half an year Active Duty from the Reserve - BushDaddy's war - total 20 years Active Reserve, 30 years Commissioned).
Don't know what the situation in the military is like now, but in my time one could not get on any military aircraft going anywhere: one could get on MAC (Military Airlift Command) flights on a space-available basis - without official orders, one would be the lowest priority and could be bumped at any time, even on a intermediate stop. And if one did not get a flight coming back one would have to pay for one's return trip out of one's own pocket, travelling commercial. I did have a chance to ffy in an assortment of other military aircraft as I was a Flight Surgeon.
I do not know if the HPSP (Health Professionals Scholarship Program - or Has Pawned Soul Previously) program of the military is still offered: it paid for the education of physicians with a year for year payback after graduation.
I did once tell an Army physician that he should advise his son to join in other than the Medical Corps; but that was because his son was considering becoming a Naval Aviator. His son had got such good grades in pre - med that he had been offered several schorarships to medical school. My arugment was that those grades would stay with him, and he could go to medical school later on, but he would not meet the age requirements later for flight training.
Short of that, I would not recommend that anyone with prospects for medical school sheuld seek a commission in anything other than the Medical Corps.
Incidentally it was 500.000 killed in West Pakistan alone at the time of Partition, and 10,000,000 evicted from West Pakistan and 20,000,000 evicted from East Pakistan (now Bangladesh).
