People who teach their kids conclusions are harming their kids ability to understand reality, and are thus abusers. Those who teach methods are not. This is a difference in kind. People who teach their kids the conclusion that Santa Claus exists are not inflicting a lifetime full of guilt or fear. Those who teach that Jesus Christ exists are. The latter are far more egregious. This is a difference in degree.

    great podcast

I cannot stand hearing all the propaganda quotes about public school, i honestly do not want to continue going to college, i already know most what I'm going over, and like almost my entire expereince of school, its mainly mindless acting through motions people use force to make you go through.

    Thanks Luke!

I've listened to almost all of the podcasts on here so far, very high quality.  He mixes in a good sampling of media clips from movies or music that apply well to the topic.  Also he adds a plethora of links to click through with each podcast.

I'm interested to see what direction he takes the podcast once he gets past the political aspects.

Thanks for linking this Luke! Looks excellent.

It should be especially interesting since at the moment I am studying the formation of the first modern welfare state and public educational system in Bismark's Germany (that one ended spectaclarly - a highly militarized popultion completely subservient to a paternalistic state under the leadership of some highly useless leaders (after the resignation of Bismark). Most historians accept that the militarized nature of the school system was a huge factor in the aggressive nature of German foreign policy leading to WWI and setting the stage for WWII.

That sounds like a fascinating topic of study. I think then I was under the false impression that it was the Russian/Soviet empire which introduced the first mandatory 'schooling'.

I have no doubt that the origins of all war and institutionalized violence takes root in the abuse, moral corruption and indoctrination of children. You'll likely find the psychohistorical material particularly relevant on this topic (Lloyd deMause et al), as well as much of the work of psychotherapist Alice Miller, especially her chapters on Hitler and child abuse in pre-war Germany. Of course Stef has covered a lot of this material superbly in various podcasts but I also think that your particular angle and specialized expertise would make for a interesting line of inquiry.

    Re: School Sucks

Nope, it was around long before the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. The Bolsheviks really struck on the idea from the example of the Prussian state. They realized that if the revolution was to be successful in the long run, they needed to get their hands on the populations children as soon as possible. I was slightly mistaken in the post above that it was only instituted under Bismark. It had been around since the late 18th Century in various parts of Prussia, Bismark extended the complusary schooling to the whole country and centralized and standardized the administation of those schools. Interestingly enough it was Martin Luther who was one of the first advocators of complusary public education, so that everyone could read the bible. So the schools really served a double purpose at that time - indoctrinate children in the state religion (which at the time was being greatly challenged by the rise of Enlightenment philosophy) and indoctrinate the children into viewing the state or the nation as a kind of God on earth.

I listened to the first two podcasts today on the tube and absolutely loved them. It's great to hear someone with such great, specialized knowledge of a subject such as education come at the it with uncomprimising morality.

Will post back here if I pick up any more interesting tidbits about this area :)
