Re: Knowing freedom is my blessing and my curse.

"...no libertarian can possibly shrink the government down to a justifiable, reasonable, right size."

It isn't justifiable, it isn't reasonable, so there can be no right size.

    "...liberty is the highest virtue"

I don't see how liberty can even be a virtue.  I could see how truth could be the highest virtue.  Or I could see how honesty could be the highest virtue. Stuff like that.

"...but warming to this possibility means abandoning years of work establishing a home, career and social base here in New York."

What has years of work establishing a home, career and social base there done for you?  What has it resulted in?  You're clearly not happy.  It clearly has not brought you happyness.

I'm glad you found FDR.  It's all uphill from here.  Welcome.

    Six Echo: What's god?
Supervisor: Well, you know when you want something really bad and you close your eyes and wish for it?  God's the guy that ignores you.

Re: Knowing freedom is my blessing and my curse.

Thanks for your response, ich.  I'm looking forward to the uphill climb.

You're right, government isn't, can't and wont be any of those things.  Wish I knew that earlier, given all the ruthless politicians for whom I worked, voted, funded and argued.

Perhaps I mixed up terms a bit, I think I meant that liberty is the ideal that virtuous people strive for.

And no, I'm not very happy.  But starting from scratch in the Free State is a risky, new and altogether horrifying prospect.  I'm not arguing for fear, or saying it's rational or helpful.  It's just there, I have to acknowledge it before I take a plunge.

    Jeff,

I just read your story and found some similarities to my path to this place.

I'm curious how are you doing now? Have you decided to move to NH? How is your relationship with your parents these days?

    Cheers,
    Kevin

I share almost all of your experiences. I let everything hold me back for two decades of my life. However, I think you are still lucky enough to have been born in U.S.A, you can still travel almost freely where you want as long can one can afford. For a person from third world country, we have to show endless documents and go through flitering processes to escape. That is the process I am now going through just to get more education abroad. Good luck with your Act II !
